So what the heck IS
Mardi Gras? "The Biggest Free Show on Earth"!
Throwing trinkets to
the parade crowds started in the early 1870s by the Twelfth Night
Revelers. In 1884, Rex started using medallions instead of
trinkets. These medallions are represented by today's doubloons,
which are aluminum and anodized in many different colors. They
depict the parade's theme on one side and the Krewe's emblem on the
other. They are very popular and become collectors' items.
Along with beads and doubloons, other popular throws include plastic
cups, bikini underwear (yep), and stuffed animals. |
